Why is Carvedilol used?

Carvedilol is used to treat:

  • High blood pressure.
  • Chest pain caused by narrowing of the blood vessels that supply blood to the heart (angina).
  • Weakness of the heart muscle (heart failure).

Do not take Carvedilol:

  • If you are allergic to the active ingredients or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.
  • If you have shortness of breath and wheezing due to asthma or other lung diseases.
  • If you have severe heart failure with fluid retention (edema) it is treated with injectable medications.
  • If you have liver problems.
  • If your heartbeat is too slow.
  • If you have very low blood pressure.
  • If you have Prinzmetal's angina.
  • If you have a pheochromocytoma (a tumor of the adrenal gland that causes high blood pressure).
  • If you have a condition called metabolic acidosis (increased acidity of the blood plasma).
  • If you have severely poor circulation in your hands and feet, which leads to coldness and pain.
  • If you have conduction problems in your heart called AV block.
  • If you are currently being treated with verapamil or diltiazem injections.

Warnings and Precautions:

Tell your doctor about all your health conditions, including:

  • If you have heart problems.
  • If you have or have had any liver, kidney, or thyroid problems.
  • If you have diabetes.
  • If you have a skin condition called psoriasis.
  • If you have poor circulation affecting your hands or feet or Raynaud's phenomenon.

Possible side effects:

  • Stop using this product and seek immediate medical attention if you develop a rash; itching; red, blistered, or peeling skin; tightness in the chest or throat; difficulty breathing, swallowing, or speaking; unusual hoarseness; or swelling of the mouth, face, lips, tongue, or throat. The frequency with which these side effects occur is not known.
  • If your symptoms worsen, contact your doctor.

Very common side effects (may affect more than 1 in 10 people):


  • dizziness
  • headache
  • fatigue
  • low blood pressure

Other medicines and carvedilol:

Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take, especially:

  • Other medications for high blood pressure
  • Diltiazem
  • Verapamil
  • Medications for treating irregular heartbeats
  • Digoxin
  • Medications used to treat mental health problems
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
  • corticosteroids
  • migraine medications
  • Angina medications
  • nasal decongestants
  • estrogen
  • Cyclosporin


How to take Carvedilol:

  • This property is intended for adults.
  • Take this medication as directed by your doctor.
  • If carvedilol is used for heart failure, take it with food.

For high blood pressure:

  • The usual starting dose is 12.5 mg once a day for the first two days.
  • The dose is then increased to 25 mg once a day (maximum: 50 mg per day).

For angina:

  • The usual starting dose is 12.5 mg once a day for the first two days.
  • The dose is then increased to 25 mg once a day (maximum: 100 mg per day).

For heart failure:

  • The starting dose is 3.125 mg twice daily for two weeks.
  • Your doctor will increase your dose if needed.

How to store Carvedilol:

  • Store at room temperature below 86°F (30°C).
  • Keep this medicine out of reach of children.
  • Do not use this medicine after the expiry date printed on the carton.
